Facilities Master Plan
Client: North Florida / South Georgia Veterans Health System
Location: VAMC Gainesville, FL, and VAMC Lake City, FL
Construction of a new bed tower at the Malcom Randall VA Medical Center in Gainesville provided single-patient rooms to replace 238 beds in multi-bed wards. After the patient beds were moved to the new tower, approximately 65,000 departmental gross square feet became available. In anticipation of the available space, AKEA was contracted to prepare a master space plan, not only for the Gainesville VAMC but for the Lake City VAMC as well. It was determined that the Gainesville facility had an additional deficit of almost 500,000 square feet due to program or functional deficiencies, VA criteria deficiencies, and growth projections for various services. AKEA was tasked to complete a plan that backfilled the vacant space and accommodated the needed space in renovated or new areas. The much smaller Lake City facility had similar deficiencies that required correction in the master plan. The AKEA team conducted two separate studies, one for each campus, and a single final report was presented for both. The report focused on a five-year vision but incorporated any known projects beyond the five years.
