Replace Cooling Towers
Client: Department of Veterans Affairs
Location: Atlanta VA Medical Center, Decatur, GA
AKEA provided the design for installation of new cooling towers and associated pumps and piping, electrical power supplies, makeup water connections, and direct digital control (DDC) system compatible with the existing hospital-wide DDC network. The design also contained provisions to install temporary portable cooling towers to maintain condensing water service to existing hospital centrifugal chillers during installation of the new towers. AKEA also helped the VA to locate the site for the new cooling towers and pumps. Under a previous contract, AKEA had evaluated the feasibility and approximate civil and structural cost to replace the existing cooling towers with towers to be placed atop a nursing home adjacent to the medical center. The existing structure was found to be capable of withstanding the anticipated additional vertical loads without modification, but application of lateral loads would have required increasing the capacity of some existing structural members, at significant cost and effort.
