Parking Garage (Phase 2)
Client: Department of Veterans Affairs
Location: Malcom Randall VA Medical Center, Gainesville, FL
This contract called for development of complete construction documents and construction period services for a new parking garage located at Parking Lot 7 at the Gainesville VAMC. The design was to follow the same criteria used for development of the existing Phase 1 parking garage and would provide an additional 350 to 400 parking spaces. Along with the typical horizontal and vertical constraints of the structure, vertical construction was to comply with Federal Aviation Administration requirements related to a neighboring hospital’s heliport landing approach. The Phase 2 garage was designed as a 5-level, 175,270-square-foot standalone structure that could support future horizontal expansions and eventually tie into Phase 1 via an infill structure. AKEA utilized the facility master plan to anticipate total future parking needs and designed the infill to provide additional parking for the lowest cost.
