Fuel Underground Storage Tank Remediation
Client: Department of Veterans Affairs
Location: Atlanta VA Medical Center, Decatur, GA
AKEA provided the design for remediation of two existing 25,000-gallon fuel underground storage tanks (USTs) at the Atlanta VAMC. The single-wall USTs, in operation since around 1976, provided fuel to three boilers. The single-wall tanks required removal and replacement with double-wall USTs in accordance with EPA mandate (40 CFR 280). AKEA’s design called for removal of the two existing USTs and all associated piping and monitoring equipment, and installation of two new 20,000-gallon aboveground storage tanks in a concrete vault, plus double-walled piping, associated explosion-proof electrical service, and controls for the new three-boiler fuel system. The design also provided for construction of a new fuel system to serve the three boilers during removal of the existing tanks and installation of the new tanks. This project was a task order under an Atlanta VAMC IDIQ contract for AE services.
