Expand Intensive Care Unit

AKEA provided complete AE design for renovation of three existing patient wards into a new medical intensive care unit and spinal cord examination area. Initial requirements included provisions for 30 beds and enclosure of approximately 2,300 square feet of open-air patio into usable MICU floor space. Ongoing design meetings with VA staff resolved that the new design would provide for 18 patient rooms, including 2 isolation rooms, and that approximately 25 percent of the patio area would be enclosed to accommodate a new waiting room and a portion of the staff lounge. The design included enclosing part of a second open-air patio into a new mechanical room to support the new spinal area renovation. The spinal area HVAC design began the eventual transition away from the existing, aging HVAC system. Total area of renovation was approximately 29,000 square feet.
