Sea King Parking Lot Expansion and Pond
Client: NAVFAC Southeast
Location: Naval Air Station Jacksonville, FL
Project to expand the parking lot at the Sea King Park recreation area at NAS Jacksonville and obtain a storm water permit to support the expansion. The parking lot expansion is a gravel lot approximately 290 by 130 feet in size, with concrete ribbon curb. The expansion creates two aisles of 90-degree parking on the north and south perimeters, with double parking aisles in the center, for an overall total of 100 parking spaces (designated by curb stops). AKEA exceeded the client’s quality expectations by anticipating the use of the parking lot by larger commercial vehicles such as garbage trucks and making construction adjustments (removing two bollards and widening the far side of the lot) to accommodate larger turn radii required by such vehicles, which was not taken into account in the client’s approval of the design. The project includes permitting an off-site pond that will serve as a future regional storm water pond to serve the storm water drainage basin centered along Birmingham Avenue of NAS Jacksonville. Calculations, drainage plans, and exhibits were prepared to support the permit applications to the St. Johns River Water Management District.
