Barracks / Expansion of K9 Facility
Client: NAVFAC Southeast
Location: Bonao, Dominican Republic
AKEA was contracted to construct a dormitory, canine classroom, and dog kennel at a canine training center in Bonao, Dominican Republic. The approximately 5,000-square-foot dormitory is an open bay building with accommodations for up to 40 male participants at the canine school. It includes restroom and shower facilities plus a kitchen and dining area. The 1,200-square-foot canine classroom consists of four spaces to simulate rooms; one room can be tightly sealed off and the other three are interconnected plus accessible from the exterior. The 5,000-square-foot kennel can house 24 dogs and is situated between an existing on-site kennel and training area. The structure of all three new buildings is concrete slab on grade with load-bearing concrete masonry unit (CMU) walls and columns supporting metal-framed roof trusses and intermediate framing covered by a standing-seam metal roof system. Interior partitions and chase walls are CMU with durable low-maintenance interior finishes throughout. All three buildings are naturally ventilated. The project included installation of a septic system for the dormitory plumbing system and the new and existing kennels.
